According to Birmingham Planning Commission records, the vacant space at 163 W Maple Rd, which once belonged to Seven Daughters Coffee, is now under construction to develop a new coffee house. Materials submitted to the Birmingham Historic District Commission last December indicate a new business called The Last Bean is taking over the space.

Materials indicate the business is owned by Joseph Labib, who is a physical therapy doctor and also operates a few other businesses in the area. Rendering of the new business suggests the cafe will serve premium coffee, snacks, and pastries. The application, submitted by Troy-based Kalajian Architecture and Design, proposed to renovate the existing storefront, including “glazing, flat wood or smooth stucco façade materials, and a large soffit over the main entrance.”

Renderings created by Olon Interior show tiled flooring, a large black-and-white historical photographic mural, a mixture of high tops and regular seating, a retail counter that sells baked goods, snacks, and other grab-and-go items, and additional beverage coolers on one wall.

Seven Daughters Coffee, which opened in 2020, closed in 2022. The space has remained vacant since then. What Now Detroit reached out to Labib with a request for comments but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage. Birmingham’s planning records indicate the project is “under construction,” but no further details are available.
