Located at 415 S. Beechtree St., The Unicorn Tavern is operated by local owner Garry Boyd. Just like the tavern’s name was inspired by the owner’s late daughter Mackenzie, the new restaurant bar’s name was a tribute to the owner’s children CJ and Charlie, and their love for mythical creatures.

The Dragon and The Mermaid is situated in the tavern’s backyard. Construction for the outdoor dining space has been ongoing since August with contractor Kozak Construction LLC. The outdoor space, designed by Grand Haven-based Architektura, will include a deck, a gazebo, and a fireplace. The space will seat 150 people in the outdoor space, with a standalone bar and kitchen currently under construction in a 40-foot storage container Boyd purchased earlier this year.

The Dragon and The Mermaid will serve a menu different from The Unicorn Tavern’s usual offering, including burnt ends, a Boyd family favorite, sides, sandwiches, burgers, and vegan options. The restaurant is designed to be seasonal, operating from May through September. By the time of this coverage, Boyd had not provided any comment regarding his plans with the restaurant’s space during off-seasons.
