Born in Detroit is founded by Anthony and Michael Tomey, George and Alex Bourkoulas, and Michael Shumaker. All five founders were born in Detroit, hence the name of the brand. Anthony and Michael Tomey are also part of family-operated Tomey Group, one of the largest multi-unit Jimmy John’s franchisee in Michigan. The same founder group also operates a sister brand, 8 Mile Vodka.

There is no opening timeframe or menu sneak peek available for the new concept, but Free Detroit Press mentioned the restaurant will feature “a curated menu that showcases the city’s diverse and vibrant food culture, offering travelers an authentic Detroit dining experience,” serving Detroit style pizzas, cocktails, and some Detroit-centric merchandise.

“I mean you have to have coneys and we got to serve Vernors. We make a Moscow mule with our vodka, with a shot of Vernors in there,” Tomey told Fox2Detroit. “We call it the Detroit Donkey.”

What Now Detroit reached out to Tomey but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage.
