Betsy and Greg Murdoch, Amy Peterson, and Antonio Luck is the power team behind the beloved Detroit church-turned-gathering-spot, The Congregation. Now, the group is making a new investment to turn the building next door at 1920 Atkinson St into a pizzeria with apartment complexes above. The new pizza shop will be called The Rectory and is slated to open in Q1 of 2025. This news was first seen in Crain’s Detroit Business.

The project received its zoning approval back in 2020, with Peterson leading development and construction. The building, which has sat vacant for almost 30 years, will house The Rectory on the first floor and two apartments on the second floor.

“The Rectory, a new pizza shop, which will be next door to The Congregation Detroit, is officially on its way! We’re thrilled to expand and bring something fresh to our beloved neighborhood,” Peterson posted on social media last month.

According to the plans submitted by the ownership group, The Rectory and The Congregation will share large portions of outdoor spaces with a new porch connecting the two establishments. Muldoch told Crain’s that the restaurant can seat about 24 people inside with another 60 seats on the three-season porch.

“We’re totally excited about everything,” Murdoch told Crain’s. “My business partners and I live within two blocks of the businesses. The house has changed hands a number of times. The first time we walked in it was gutted. We’re adding something we hope people will enjoy.”

What Now Detroit reached out to the owners, but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage.
