As a leading multi-unit Jersey Mike’s franchisee in Michigan, Big Lake Subs treats all franchisee-owned locations as a family business. Balen, a 2022 “40 Under 40” nominee, oversees the operation and marketing of all these locations. Balen currently owns locations in Fenton, Flint, Grand Blanc, and Kalamazoo.

There are currently 72 Jersey Mike’s locations across Michigan. However, those in Battle Creek must drive to Portage or Kalamazoo to enjoy the chain’s crowd-favorite sandwiches. Meanwhile, Balen is also working on opening the first Jersey Mike’s in Bay City this winter and is looking to expand into Saginaw, though a site has not been chosen.
