Mr. G’s Chophouse is under construction in a 7,200 square-foot corner suite at the strip mall located at 56129 Van Dyke Ave. The new restaurant should open in May, according to owner Mario Gojcaj.

“I want people to be able to come to Mr. G’s and leave everything behind and really enjoy themselves while they’re here,” Gojcaj says.

For Gojcaj, a formally trained chef who’s cooked in top-notch restaurants, Mr. G’s represents a return to form.

Gojcaj attended culinary school in Manhattan and lived in New York City for two years. He’s worked at Michelin Star restaurants, an honor reserved for the highest-rated dining hautes.

He owned a fast-casual restaurant in the area that he wound up selling. Then in June 2020, as the pandemic was setting in, Gojcaj opened Jams Brunch House and Bar, a cozy diner along Hayes Road in Shelby Township. He envisions the new steakhouse as an upscale “big brother” to Jams.

“Now I’m getting a chance to go back to my dinner roots, I guess,” he said. “We’re going to do a little bit more of a high-end menu. The décor’s going to be really beautiful, it’s a really sexy environment.”

The steakhouse will feature custom lighting from a crystal chandelier. A large square bar with wrap around seating will sit at the center of the room as a focal point. Everyone seated in the dining room will be able to see the bar, which Gojcaj regards as “the gem of the restaurant.”

In addition to the T-bones and porterhouses, Mr. G’s will offer lighter fare like seafood, sauteed chicken dishes, pasta recipes, shrimp cocktail crabcakes and oysters. The chophouse will serve dinner Tuesday through Friday and offer brunch, lunch, and dinner on weekends.

Mr. G’s will be able to accommodate sizeable crowds. The main dining hall seats about 125 guests and a private banquet room reserved for special events can hold another 125.

Gojcaj anticipated seating and furniture would arrive over the next week. Floors have already been installed and the bar’s built. He expected construction to be complete by March 30.

Afterward, Gojcaj plans to finish hiring and training his staff – he’s currently looking for an executive chef and general manager – in preparation for a May grand opening. “This place is going to be more about a night on the town,” Gojcaj said. ”The space is going to be so beautiful that you can make it an experience and you can dress up or you can have it for special occasions as well. We really want to give the area something to look forward to. We really want to have a spot in the neighborhood that’s a hot spot where I think people can go.”
