A popular Detroit-based coffee brand that started with selling their products out of a barber shop is now planning on two new full-service cafe locations in the Detroit metro. Lucky Detroit, with locations in Detroit’s Corktown, Birmingham and a to-go spot in Grosse Pointe Park, is slated to open two more cafes in Royal Oak and Grosse Pointe. Founded by Jami and Chad Buchanan in 2017, Lucky Detroit has quickly become an icon of its own. Now, the coffee brand has the opportunity to stand on its own two feet without the barbershop aspect. The new Royal Oak location is anticipated to open soon with the regular Lucky menu. A new menu with unique offerings is planned to roll out in September.
“Honestly, I’m very excited about having the opportunity to run these cafes separate from barbershops, just to let them kind of take their own shape,” Chad Buchanan told Crain’s. “Lucky has always been No. 2 for the barbershops, so now it gets the opportunity to be No. 1.”
A second location at 17001 Kercheval Ave in Grosse Pointe will occupy a 4,100-square-foot space and is anticipated in early October. The space is currently occupied by Starbucks, whose lease will end by the end of July. Once Lucky’s new Grosse Pointe location opens, the existing Grosse Pointe Park “micro-cafe” will operate upon reduced hours.
The Crain’s article also mentioned that Lucky Detroit is working on a walk-up food concept and hopes to gain city approval by mid-August.
