The new El Tapatio has just received approval from the Walker Planning Commission last week to move forward with plans for a new 5,000-square-foot restaurant located at 363 Cummings Ave. NW. The new restaurant will have an indoor capacity of approximately 100 people and an additional 40 on a proposed outdoor patio. The space will also host performances from Mariachi and Tex-Mex bands.
El Tapatio will serve various traditional Mexican recipes, including burritos, fajitas, and tacos. The restaurant will also have a full bar featuring a wide selection of mixed drinks. The interior will create a rustic, ranch-style environment, perfect for small and large groups alike. While the name may be confusing, El Tapatio is an independent business unrelated to the Muskegon diner with the same name.
Currently, El Tapatio is going through renovations after Bernal has leased the property. A seasoned restauranteur, Bernal has opened a handful of Mexican restaurants, including El Rancho restaurants, Taqueria Vallarta in Holland, Los Ranchos in Holland and Jenison, and a few others. The El Tapatio in Walker will be the first for the new concept while Bernal plans on three to four more El Tapatio locations in the future across the Grand Rapids area.
El Tapatio is anticipated to open at the beginning of 2024. By the time of this coverage, Bernal has not replied to What Now Detroit‘s email request for comments.
