Yumiis Rolled Ice Cream is almost ready to open in Birmingham at 205 E Maple Rd. The little frozen treats cafe originally hoped to open this August, but faced some unexpected delay. Owner Diauja Woods confirmed with What Now Detroit that the shop is now slated to open in Mid-October.

According to information available on the cafe’s Facebook page, Yumii’s will serve 10+ rolled ice cream flavors, coffee, assorted cookies, and matcha drinks. Different from traditional ice cream, rolled ice cream is made by pouring liquid ice cream onto an extremely cold surface. As the liquid flash-freezes, it’s rolled into thin strips with a spatula.
Woods told What Now Detroit in an email that she was bringing the trend from Georgia back home: “I went off to college in Georgia and I’ve seen how much rolled Icecream had a demand in that state. I thought bringing the idea back to my hometown would be something great to do as we don’t have many concepts like it.”
The space at 205 E Maple Road was previously occupied by a retail business called Barbara Boz Boutiquqe. The 717-square-foot space is located in the heart of Birmingham’s shopping district with several eateries around, including Sidecar Slider Bar, Paris Baguette, Commonwealth Cafe, and Social Grill right next door.
Once open, the cafe will offer free wifi and table reservations for those who work remotely and need a change of scene from their home office.
“To my future customers: I am so excited to meet you & excited to provide a wonderful + tasty experience starting this October,” said Woods.
